NATIONAL GEOINFORMATION POLICY

Policy · Technology

A Policy establishes a national geoinformation infrastructure for managing spatial data and GIS technology in government planning and service delivery. It targets federal and state agencies, GIS companies, urban planners, and research institutions. This aims to enable accurate data sharing for better resource management and decision-making.

NATIONAL GEOINFORMATION POLICY

What Is This Policy?

Nigeria's policy for the development and management of geoinformation infrastructure, including spatial data, geographic information systems (GIS), and geospatial technology for government planning and service delivery.

Who Does It Target?

Federal and state government agencies using geospatial data GIS and surveying companies Urban planners and infrastructure developers Research institutions using geographic data

What Does It Aim to Achieve?

Create a national spatial data infrastructure enabling all government agencies to share and use accurate geographic information, improving planning, resource management, and service delivery.

Key Features

Spatial Data Infrastructure: Establishes a National Geospatial Data Infrastructure for sharing and accessing geographic information. Standardisation: Prescribes geospatial data standards for all government agencies to ensure interoperability. Data Sharing: Promotes open sharing of non-sensitive geospatial data between government agencies. Capacity Building: Builds capacity in GIS, remote sensing, and geospatial analysis across MDAs.

Current Status

Rollout Stage: Active Coverage: Nationwide Beneficiaries: All sectors using geographic information; urban planners; emergency management Funding: Federal Government; development partner support

How to Access

MDAs must adopt national geospatial standards for all spatial data Geospatial data from government sources available through the National Geospatial Data Infrastructure Private sector GIS companies must comply with national data standards Application method: Engage the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation.

Legal Framework

Operates under the National Information Technology Development Agency Act 2007, the Survey Act Cap S16 LFN 2004, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency Act, and the National Space Research and Development Agency Act 2010. Draws on the UN Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) framework and the INSPIRE Directive as a comparative standard.
