Legal Framework

The National Gender Policy 2006 operates under the 1999 Constitution (Section 42 — freedom from discrimination), the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 (enacted subsequently), and the Child Rights Act 2003. It aligns with Nigeria's obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the African Charter's Maputo Protocol on Women's Rights, and the Beijing Platform for Action. The updated National Gender Policy (2021–2026) replaced this earlier version.
