Legal Framework
The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency Act 2006 is the primary legislation establishing NOSDRA. It operates alongside the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, the Environmental Impact Assessment Act 1992, and the National Environmental (Petroleum and Petroleum Products) Regulations issued under NESREA authority. International alignment is with the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC 1990), the IMO OPRC-HNS Protocol, and the Bonn Agreement on oil spill cooperation.
